TEDx Asheville is in its fourth year. Modeled after the TED nonprofit in Long Beach/Palm Springs, this local event offers an enticing lineup of speakers. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design; the theme of this year’s Asheville event is The Edge.
I was nominated to present at the TEDx Asheville event this past spring. I felt congruent with stepping in, went through the interview process and was chosen to speak.
Agreeing to do a TED talk has, for me, been an opportunity to gain clarity on what messages I carry that are calling to be shared. As well, I’ve been learning about how to stay present in the preparation with intent to be grounded and present on the stage. I'm working with coaches who have been helpful in finding my voice, working with themes as well as presentation syntax. This feels an essential part of my work and is teaching me, once again, about the power of intent as I step into relationship with an audience.
I had thought of TED speakers as more technical in nature - highlighting research, data and results. I didn’t feel resonant with a technical talk ~ my message being more focused around paying attention, setting intentions and centering in a heart space. I’ve now listened to numerous TED talks and know that not all TED speakers fall into the ‘technical’ category; many offer stories of transformation and opportunities to look at life with new perspective. Here are a few of my favorites:
Brene Brown - The Power of Vulnerability I so enjoy listening to Brene; she's willing to step into her own vulnerability to share an important message.
Eve Ensler - Suddenly, my body I always enjoy poet and activist Eve Ensler; her presentations are rich and to the point.
Ric Elias - 3 things I learned while my plane crashed I love this brief but poignant talk; it emphasizes what's important about life.
Jill Bolte Taylor - stroke of insight Brain scientist Taylor shares her personal experience of having a massive stroke with fascinating insights into how we function.
I hope you’ll make plans to attend. Tickets are now on sale and you’ll want to get them soon as the price will increase on October. 5. Details and ticket information are found here.
