Our neighbor’s dog Jordan spends her days on our front porch. We’ve enjoyed her company for years. Pre-children, I would invite her into our home in the morning to rub her back and love on her.
Jordan has been incredibly gentle and patient with our children, her presence evoking squeals of joy. Each day when Jordan appears at our door, she’s greeted warmly by tiny fingers offering a doggie biscuit. After her snack, Jordan settles in the sunshine, my daughter Liza snuggled next to her. Sometimes Liza brings a book to read or simply visits with Jordan telling her of the day’s events.
Jordan’s blind, both eyes removed the past couple years to glaucoma. And she can’t hear, but responds to hugs, most of which come from Liza.
I’ve often wondered about the deep connection that my children have with Jordan as she doesn’t play games or lick faces, but simply holds a strong loving presence in our lives. Last evening I was blessed with an insight from Jordan’s closest companion. Liza had just told me that she gave Jordan a biscuit. “And,” she added, “it’s okay that Jordan can’t see because she has eyes in her heart.”

What a heart warming story! Beautiful!
